The Hornets put together a gritty defensive performance at home Tuesday afternoon, but a late goal by Santiago Canyon handed the Hornets a tough 1-0 loss in Orange Empire Conference play.
The loss drops Fullerton to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while Santiago Canyon improves to 8-0-2 and 3-0 in the OEC. Currently, the Hawks and Saddleback are tied for first place in the conference.
After 80 minutes of scoreless play, the visiting Hawks finally broke through in the 82nd minute when Ayleen Jimenez fired an unassisted shot from 20 yards out that found the back of the net. The strike proved to be the difference in a tightly contested matchup between two determined squads.
FC goalkeeper Kimmy Sperling had a stellar outing despite the loss, recording 12 saves while facing 13 shots on goal from the top team in the OEC.
On the offensive end, the Hornets were limited in their chances but did manage one shot attempt from Kayla Bereal. Despite the narrow offensive output, Fullerton's composure and work rate against a high-powered Santiago Canyon side reflected a growing chemistry within the group.
Up Next: Fullerton (3-7 overall, 1-2 OEC) will look to bounce back in their next OEC matchup this Friday (Oct 10th) at Golden West College. Game time is at 3:00 pm.
