The Hornets kicked off the season Friday with a tough opener against host Mt. San Antonio College falling 6-2 despite late pressure. Mt. SAC jumped out early scoring 6 runs in four innings. Fullerton's offense woke up in sixth and seventh innings scoring 2 runs, however it was too late as the Mounties closed the door.
Fullerton quickly regrouped in the second game of the day locking down its first win of the season edging past a tough Ventura College team 4-3. The Hornets took advantage of timely hitting and aggressive baserunning, while freshman right-hander Grace Workman delivered a steady performance in the circle by going the distance (3 Ks/2 earned runs). Fullerton's offense did just enough getting a run across in the third and 3 more in the fourth. From there, FC held strong defensively for the narrow victory. Zoey Bautista had a hit and 2 RB. Sainai Smith had a hit with a RBI as did Faith Krueger.
Saturday brought the most dramatic moment of the weekend as the Hornets walked it off against LA Mission College 4-3. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Juliana Ursino came through with a clutch hit lacing a shot into left-center field that brought home Toafa Pua for the game-winner.
In the circle, Emma Gamez (4Ks/3 earned runs) was outstanding tossing a complete game and battling through traffic to keep the Hornets within striking distance all afternoon. Offensively, Ursino had 2 hits with an RBI, Lisa Villanueva had 3 hits with a run, Carlie Danovich had a hit with a RBI, and Dakoda Hilvers had a hit with a RBI.
Up Next: The Hornets (2-1 overall) will get back on the road this Friday, January 30 for a two-day stint at Bakersfield College. Game one on Friday with Fresno City will start at 3:00 pm, and game two vs. Bakersfield will follow at 6:00 pm. On Saturday, game three againsst Bakserfield will begin at 1:00 pm.
