On Tuesday afternoon, the Hornet softball diamond was filled with joy as FC President Dr. Cynthia Olivo unveiled the plans for the new field.
It's been a long time coming for the Hornet softball program that first began playing on the old field off North Berkeley Avenue in the 1950's. It's one of the winningest programs in the college's history with 1 national title, 2 state titles, and 14 conference titles since softball became a sanctioned sport in 1978. Prior becoming a recognized sport under the CCCAA, softball played as an intramural team under the Women's Athletic Association (WAA).
The new field will move out from the parking lot 16 feet creating more space behind the backstop that allows for more seating, a new concession stand, restrooms, a press area, along with new home and visitor dugouts that will both house team rooms. On the home side there will be a locker room, an office for coaches, batting cages, and spaces created for storage. Both sides of the field will also feature bullpens for the home and visiting teams.
Marica Foster was wonderful as the master of ceremonies, while Dr. Olivo, Coach Crystal Aguirre, and Coach Marian "Speedy" Mendoza addressed the excited crowd.
Members of the 2024 State Championship team were recognized and honored sporting their new shiny rings with the entire 2025 squad cheering them on. It's heartwarming events like this that bring the community together to celebrate and inspire the past, present, and future of Hornet student-athletes.
Once a Hornet, Always a Hornet!
