When it mattered most, the No. 14 Hornets found their mojo in the final minutes Wednesday night to knock out visiting No. 19 San Diego City 1-0 in the first round of the 3C2A Southern California Regionals.
When it mattered most, the No. 14 Hornets found their mojo in the final minutes Wednesday night to knock out visiting No. 19 San Diego City 1-0 in the first round of the 3C2A Southern California Regionals.
With the win, Fullerton bumps its record up to 9-6-7 overall and will now face Cuyamaca College on the road this Saturday. The last time these two teams played was this past September 16th on Hal Sherbeck Field. The Coyotes won that match 4-1. The San Diego City Knights finish their season with a respectable 11-7-5 overall record.
With just under five minutes remaining in regulation, freshman winger Jacob Leggette buried the game's only goal at 85:09. The goal came off a perfectly timed assist off a corner kick from Andrew Arreola, who delivered the ball into space where Leggette had the opportunity to knock it into the back of the net for the game winner.
While Leggette's goal was a big highlight of the night, it was the Hornet defense that held strong in the final minutes thwarting the Knight's desperate attempts. Players like Bryant Polmounter, Andrew Arreola, and Jarrod Rodriguez made tough plays to hold the line. Antonio Villafana nearly scored another one for FC, with just over a minute left, on a breakaway shot that just missed by inches.
Fullerton goalkeeper Steven Martinez stood tall in goal making 2 crucial saves and recording another shutout as Fullerton turned away multiple second-half pushes from San Diego City.
Up Next: The No. 14 Hornets (9-6-7 overall) face bigger test this Saturday, November 22 when the team takes a trip down south to El Cajon to face No. 3 Cuyamaca College (18-1-2) for Round 2 of the SoCal Regionals. Game time will be at 2:00 pm.
