It was a great year for Fullerton College Athletics with many individual accomplishments achieved as well as team success as the department invited family, faculty, coaches, students, and campus administration to the North Gym on Tuesday afternoon to celebrate distinguished student-athletes for the 26th Academic Athletic Awards.
This year featured many highs for FC athletics with conference titles in men's soccer (three-peat) as well as men's basketball (4-peat). School records were broken in women's basketball (Kaylee Shimoda/Career 3-pointers), softball (Veronica Moore/Career RBI), baseball (Trevor Schmidt/Career RBI), and men's volleyball (multiple records). The Hornet men's basketball squad were State Runner-ups and the women's Lacrosse team went all the way to the WCLA National Championships in Kansas City, Missouri winning two out of three matches.
Always a truehearted supporter of FC Athletics, President Dr. Cynthia Olivo was on hand to congratulate the student-athletes. Athletic Director Scott Giles served as the Emcee handing out the awards to many student-athletes who had success in the classroom and on the field. Coaches spoke about their players' positive attributes and contributions and wished them well on their journey in the next level.
From the Counseling Division, Heather Halverson was honored with a Special Recognition Award and has always been so very helpful to FC Athletics. Heather and her family love going to Hornet basketball games as much as possible.
There were many Fullerton College student-athletes recognized as Hornet Scholars maintaining a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher completing at least 24 units. All of this would not have been possible if not for the tireless efforts of the FC faculty and staff.
The Academic Athletic Awards was the brainchild of beloved former Head Football Coach Gene Murphy, who poured his heart and soul into furthering the education of Fullerton College student-athletes. Athletic Director Scott Giles has done an excellent job in keeping the torch lit for Coach Murphy's tradition by creating an atmosphere on campus where students-athletes are rewarded for their efforts, and given the proper tools to help further their success not only on the playing field but also in life.
